On February 7, Danny was taken to the ER to check up on some symptoms that he had the previous 2 weeks and had worsened (trouble breathing, coughing, nausea, and eventually vomiting). He had been given antibiotics on two occasions to treat what they thought was pneumonia and after a third visit and an x-ray of the chest area, doctors discovered a 15cmx13cmx8cm mass in his chest. He was admitted to the hospital that night where he’d spend the next week running tests to figure out what exactly this is and begin treatment. The tests included a biopsy to confirm what this tumor is, a lumbar puncture (also known as a spinal tap) to cancel out the possibility of any cancer cells in his cerebral spinal fluid, and a bone marrow test to make sure it didn’t make its way into his bone marrow. Because of the size of this mass pressing against his left lung and sitting near his heart, sedation was not an option for any of these. The biopsy confirmed Non Hodgkin’s T-cell Lymphoma and Danny got an installation of a PiCC line (again with no sedation) where they’d be administering his chemo through. Danny remained strong and kept his spirits high through all of this. His response to these invasive tests was “Light work, no reaction.”

After a week in the hospital, Danny went home! (yayy!) In the first month, he’d come in once, sometimes twice a week for bloodwork and chemo (some through IV, others through spinal tap) and these treatments are outpatient so he gets to go home and be in the comfort of his own home - which he loves! If Danny gets sick or spikes a fever, this complicates things and he needs to go into the hospital, which is why it’s important to keep him healthy and away from anyone who has been sick or around anyone who has been sick. Because of this, he will be completing his Senior year remotely.

Danny’s appetite has grown immensely and he has exercised his joy for cooking and trying new home-made recipes. On good days, we’ve gone to the park to get him walking around and catching some sunlight.

Danny has received some beautiful care packages, more stuffies than he can count, sweet messages and videos and so much love from his family and friends. There’s even a group of runners who have dedicated the month of March to Danny <3

We are so fortunate to have such a loving and supportive community and a wonderful team at Kaiser who has taken such great care of our sweet boy. We ask that you continue to keep Danny in your thoughts and prayers.

Con todo amor  y agradecimiento,
